Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey is putting the community on notice about a recurring scam taking place where a person calls a community member, threatens them with the possibility of arrest, and demands payment in the form of credit cards or gift cards. We recently had a local couple scammed out of $3,000.
These particular scammers are routing calls through the Sheriff’s Office main line, so that a legit phone number appears on the victim’s caller ID. They are also using real names of Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office employees.
Sheriff McGuffey and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Section would like to inform the public that the Sheriff’s Office will never seek payment from you over the phone, nor threaten jail time contingent upon payment.
If you or anyone you know has been a victim of this scam, contact the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Section at 513.851.6000.
